Hey Niobrara County 4-H Clubs,
The Niobrara County 4-H Junior Leader Club would like to invite your 4-H Club to participate in a Community Service Project Challenge.
This project is a fun and creative way for us to donate food and other non-perishable items to our local food bank. During the holidays the food banks receive lots of donations, but after the holidays pass the donations really drop off. This project will help families in need in our community during the next few months. Each club is asked to collect non-perishable items and then make a creative sculpture out of the items. Pictures of each club’s food sculpture will be judged by a panel of non-biased individuals. A prize will be awarded to the club with the winning entry.
Here are the rules of the contest:
- All food items collected and used in the sculpture must have current expiration dates. No home canned products can be used.
- All items used in the sculpture must be either non-perishable food items or other non-perishables such as laundry soap, toilet paper, kleenex, paper towel etc.
- You cannot glue or tape the items together as they will be donated after the contest, so the labels must be clean and intact. You can tie items together with string.
- Use your creativity. Ideas include creating the largest sculpture, creating a village with a train running through it, make robots out of the items, weigh your sculpture and turn in the weight with your picture- let your imaginations run wild! The sky is the limit on sculpture possibilities!!! Extra props can be added as long as they are not glued or taped to the donated items.
- Photo or photos of your club’s sculpture must by submitted to the Extension Office by March 29th, so that they can be judged, prizes awarded and the items donated to the food bank in April.
- Each club has at least one Junior Leader member in your club and they are there to help you complete this fun project.
Please introduce this project to your club members at your February 4-H Club meeting, so you can begin to collect donated items right away. Then at your March club meeting your entire club can work together to create your sculpture.
If you have any questions on this project, please call the Extension Office at 334-3534. Thanks for participating in this fun and worthwhile project!

The second 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences Activity Day was held on June 21st with 17 4-H members participating in a very busy and productive day. The kitchen was a buzz of activity during the entire day. For lunch the members prepared Chicken Noodle Casserole, Three Bean Salad and Strawberry Rhubarb Cake. The 4-H members also canned Raspberry Chocolate Sundae Sauce. All of the recipes used contained many ingredients that are being grown or could be grown in the High Tunnel at the Fairgrounds. Several of the 4-H members and adults toured the High Tunnel to check out the vegetables growth progress.
Two of the Niobrara County 4-H Junior Leaders were in charge of the sewing projects for the day. Abbey Larson taught the members how to make clothing protectors. The completed protectors will be given to the Niobrara Nursing Home residents. A total of 65 protectors were completed during the day which almost completed Abbey’s goal of 75. Sara Fahy then taught the members how to make pillow cases. Each of the members then made numerous pillow cases to give to the Santa’s Helpers project at Christmas. The goal is to have 100 cases completed by Christmas and the members completed over half that number that day. Both of these community service projects help the members to realize the importance of the giving back to the community and learning the real meaning of part the 4-H pledge that talks about “pledging my heart to greater loyalty for my club, my community, my country and my world”.
